Asbestos is the name given to a group of fibrous minerals which occur naturally in the earth. These are grouped into two mineral types known as serpentine and amphibole.

1. What is asbestos?

2. Health Effects

Asbestos disease is caused by breathing in very fine fibres. As asbestos fibres accumulate in the lungs, several types of disease may occur. Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer and Diffuse Pleural Thickening

3. How can I tell if I have asbestos in my house?

Asbestos products were widely used in building materials before the year 2000 including insulation and fire protection. A relevant asbestos survey would find any asbestos products which may have been used in your building ( see Asbestos locations)

4. What should I do if I have asbestos in my building ?

This will depend on the type and condition of the asbestos containing material (ACM). Asbestos fibre is safe provided that it remains bonded within the material in which it is used and that the fibre does not become airborne. THERE IS NO DANGER unless fibres are released and inhaled into the lungs. An asbestos survey will locate, identify and recommend what steps you need to take.

BP Asbestos surveys can provide free advice on any asbestos concerns you may have.
